Overview
The Cape Winelands are the valleys east of Cape Town around Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, with Cape Dutch buildings, wine estates and restaurants set against the mountains. They suit couples, honeymooners, food lovers and small groups.
Stellenbosch is about an hour’s drive from Cape Town and Franschhoek about 1 hr 15 min, so they work as a day trip or a two-night stay. Travellers who don’t drink wine come for the food, the gardens, the galleries and the walking and cycling.

The Winelands: good to know
Should I do a day trip or stay overnight?
A day trip covers two or three estates and lunch. Staying one or two nights is more relaxed and lets you see both towns.
Do I need to drive?
No. We book a private driver or a guided tour, which we recommend if you plan to taste wine.
Is it worth it if I don’t drink wine?
Yes. The food, gardens, galleries, walks and scenery are reasons to go on their own.
When is the best time to visit?
October to April. Harvest usually runs from about February into March.
Can I combine it with Cape Town?
Yes. Most travellers spend four or five nights in Cape Town and add the Winelands at the end.
