Overview
Tanzania has the Serengeti, where the wildebeest herds spend most of the year, the Ngorongoro Crater with its dense wildlife, and the island of Zanzibar with Stone Town and Indian Ocean beaches. It suits longer safaris, honeymoons and anyone who wants safari and beach in one trip.
It is close to Kenya: several direct flights a day reach Kilimanjaro in about an hour and Zanzibar in about an hour and a half. A northern safari can finish with a short flight to the beach.

Travel information
Getting there
Direct flights from Nairobi reach Kilimanjaro (JRO) in about an hour and Zanzibar (ZNZ) in about 1 hr 30 min.
Getting around
Road safaris in 4x4 vehicles from Arusha, light-aircraft flights to Serengeti airstrips, and short flights to Zanzibar.
Money
Tanzanian shilling (TZS). US dollars are widely used for hotels and safaris. Park fees are normally built into your quotation.
Entry requirements
These depend on your passport. Many visitors must also buy Tanzania’s inbound travel insurance, and Zanzibar runs its own scheme. Our visa centre checks what applies.
Luggage
Light-aircraft safari flights usually limit baggage to about 15–20 kg per person in soft-sided bags.
Travel times
Arusha to the Ngorongoro Crater rim is about 3–4 hours by road; the central Serengeti is roughly three hours beyond.
